Artistic Statement
I am Aneek Mandal, an emerging photographer who is deeply entranced by the nuances of the human body. The human figure is unique, unlike any other. Composed of curves, creases, and cavities, the human form unveils endless possibilities for capturing the intricacies of society.
I sit down with a camera, thinking about how blood moves from the heart to each finger of a hand, bringing warmth; the neurons firing from the brain through the spine, inciting motion; and the trillions of cells that call the body home, supporting life. My art form is capturing the intricacies of life. Early on in my education, I was inspired by my sixth-grade teacher. We would talk for hours about different topics, but they always ended up on biomechanics. How living things moved was intriguing. However, the way people think and act makes a simple topic too vast to fully explore in a single conversation. I took to photography where a single image is more than a thousand words. I capture the light scattering across the soft features of a face, exposing photos to capture every detail. Pores introduce texture on a face. Strands of hair reflect light in every direction, bringing life to dead cells. Lips introduce a burst of color in the middle of a frame. Exploring how the body functions draws me in, allowing me to explore my love for photography and anatomy. Currently, I am working on portraits emphasizing the unique form and function of the body through portraits with direct lighting. The harsh shadows bring attention to the details I wish to focus on.
